Birch Series

An adaptation, and basically the opposite process of Chinese brush painting that I created in 2008. For the birch series, I begin with misting textured ‘leaf’ paper with water making sure the paper is not too wet. Then I paint on the background. When I ‘invented’ this process I painted the white of the birch trees while the background was still damp, and then I painted the final black structure of the birches. More recently I’ve allowed the background to dry somewhat before adding the white, and then I allow the whole piece to dry before adding the black details of the birch trees.
